Ordnance Survey (OS) revealed that Cumbria was the most popular place in the UK for people to hike in 2019, with Ambleside placed in the top five of Britain’s favourite spots to start a walk. Here are some suggestions of places to stay, eat and rest your feet after a long day of rambling this summer!

A touch of luxury in one of Britain’s favourite places to start a walk

A proper pub to start (or finish) your hike

The Hare & Hounds is located in an unspoilt gem of the south Lake District, the Lyth Valley, described by Lonely Planet as ‘one of the most beautiful places on earth’. The village of Levens and the surrounding countryside has walks for all ages and abilities and for guests looking to go further afield, the pub is minutes from the historic market town of Kendal and less than half an hour from the popular Lake District destinations Windermere and Ambleside.

It’s a proper village pub, full of character, with a mean cocktail list, local cask ales, great craft beers and delicious comfort food. Complete with accommodation options including five bed and breakfast rooms, as well as a self-catering Barn Annexe, all of which are beautifully styled with lots of thoughtful touches to make for a lovely stay.

Best walks: Guests can walk along the limestone escarpment, Whitbarrow Scar where guests can take a seven mile walk from Mill Side, or tackle the six mile Arnside Knott route. For the best view of Lake Windermere, guests can drive ten minutes to start the route to Gummers How.

B&B prices start from £130. For more information, please visit www.hareandhoundslevens.co.uk
